Character AI persona template: write the person you play

Copy a Character AI player persona template and a 479-character example. Define relationships, knowledge and boundaries, then check the documented save flow.

A Character AI persona template helps you describe your role in the conversation: who you are, how you know the character, and which decisions remain yours. Start with a few consistent facts rather than writing the AI character's entire personality into your own profile.

Below are a blank worksheet and a complete, original example for a fictional adult museum restorer. EchoMelon publishes this guide and operates a separate character-chat product. Official Character.AI guidance was checked on November 3, 2026; we did not log in, save a persona, or generate replies for this article.

Copy the blank player-persona template

These headings organize your text. They are not a claim that Character.AI has a separate input field for every heading.

Name, adult age, pronouns:
Role in this story:
Relevant appearance or observable habits:
What I know or can do:
What I have not learned:
How I know this character:
What we have actually agreed to:
My current reason for being here:
Starting possessions, if relevant:
My speech, feelings, and choices remain mine to decide.

Pick details that can affect the next exchange. “I restore old photographs” gives the scene something to discuss. A long list of unrelated favorites may leave less room for the relationship and situation you actually want to establish.

For the AI's identity, goals, and speaking style, use a separate character card when the platform offers the appropriate creator tools. The player persona answers “Who am I playing?”

A complete Character AI persona example

This short version contains 479 characters, including spaces and punctuation, excluding the code fence and final line break. It is an editable example, not a guarantee about every account's current allowance.

Name: Morgan Hale, 32, they/them. Role: museum restorer. I notice paper repairs and catalog marks; I do not know the locked-room code. Nessa and I are new colleagues assigned one damaged album. We respect each other but have no shared childhood or agreed romance. My goal is to identify its missing page. I carry a pencil and a notebook. Leave my thoughts, dialogue, feelings, consent, and next actions to me. New clues can change what I know. Keep the investigation non-graphic.

Morgan is the player. Nessa, 34, is the other character in the proposed mystery. All of this material is original fiction; none of it is a transcript or a successful model test.

The example establishes a profession, useful knowledge, a relationship, and a reason to interact. It also leaves meaningful uncertainty. Morgan can notice a paper repair without automatically knowing who removed the missing page.

Make the relationship concrete without deciding its future

A useful starting relationship names what happened or what was agreed. Choose one of these alternative setups:

Starting point Text you could adapt
New colleagues “Nessa and I were assigned this album today. We have not worked together before.”
Former collaborators “We restored a collection together last year. We disagreed about one attribution and have not resolved it.”
Professional rivals “We submitted competing proposals for this project. Neither has agreed to share private research notes.”

Do not combine all three. “We met today” conflicts with an unexplained shared working history. A deliberate mystery can contain uncertainty, but accidental contradictions make your intended premise harder to identify.

Leave later trust and affection open. “We agreed to inspect one album” supplies a task. “Nessa always trusts me and accepts every suggestion” prescribes the other character's responses and removes a source of interaction.

Separate knowledge, uncertainty, and boundaries

Give your persona capabilities it can use, plus limits that leave room for discovery.

  • Knowledge: Morgan recognizes catalog marks and common paper repairs.
  • Unknown: Morgan has not learned the locked-room code or identified the missing page's owner.
  • Player boundary: Morgan's next action, speech, and feelings are for the player to supply.

An unknown is a starting condition. Morgan can learn the code after finding a valid clue. That is different from the next reply claiming Morgan has always known it.

A sentence such as “Nessa does not know my plan” is a request about fictional knowledge. It is not a technical secrecy mechanism or a promise that a model will never reveal the plan. Keep the setup fictional and inspect the replies instead of treating the profile as an enforced rules engine.

Where to put the persona in Character.AI

The official User Personas guide describes this workflow on web and mobile:

  1. Open your profile settings and select Persona.
  2. Enter the identity details you want the character to know.
  3. Review Default for all chats: enable it only if this identity is intended for that wider scope.
  4. Choose Save Changes, then start a new chat as the guide describes.

The guide also describes multiple personas. For a museum mystery, select the museum restorer rather than assuming the last identity you used is the one you want now. Our steps summarize the documentation; current labels or account-specific access may differ, and we did not verify this flow inside a signed-in account.

What if the text is too long?

Use the limit shown in your current editor. The official persona guide we consulted does not state one universal current character allowance. Avoid borrowing a number from an AI Character's Description or Definition: those are different authoring fields.

Keep a copy of the longer draft, then shorten in this order:

  1. Remove duplicate adjectives and repeated boundaries.
  2. Cut appearance details that do not affect this scene.
  3. Reduce the backstory to the event that explains the present relationship.
  4. Preserve identity, relevant knowledge, the relationship, and the player's remaining choices.

A compact persona is a starting brief. It does not need to contain the whole plot or every conversation event.

Check which facts belong somewhere else

The persona can say Morgan is a restorer. If Morgan later hands Nessa the notebook, that changing possession belongs in a current story recap, rather than repeatedly rewriting the stable identity.

Before continuing, reread your selected persona and the opening together. Do they agree on whether you have met before? Does the opening require a skill your persona does not have? Have you accidentally told the AI to act as Morgan instead of leaving Morgan to you?

If a reply uses the wrong premise, try a specific correction:

Persona clarification: I play Morgan, the museum restorer.
Morgan and Nessa met on this project today.
Please continue as Nessa without deciding Morgan's next action.

This is a proposed instruction, not a recorded fix. Keep the actual reply, including unclear results, when deciding whether to revise the setup. A short check cannot establish lasting recall or universal adherence.

If you use another product, check its own profile and save behavior. Our EchoMelon personal-character settings guide documents a different interface; its buttons and preset rules should not be assumed to match Character.AI.
